Friday's lands a big blues hitter!
07.09.08 - The Fridays on the Promenade committee is thrilled to announce they have filled
the September 5 date with a true star…Watermelon Slim & the Workers. Watermelon Slim is one of the most celebrated blues artists to
hit the scene in many years. In 2007, Slim and the band were
nominated for a record-tying 6 awards at the annual Blues
Foundation Awards. They backed that up with 6 more nominations
in 2008, winning Best Album and Best Band of the year.
Bill Homans, aka Watermelon Slim is a blue-collar man turned international performing
artist. When his tour of Viet Nam ended in a military hospital
where he taught himself to play slide guitar, he returned
to the U.S. and became a fervent war protester. Slim bounced
around the country, performing at peace rallies and picking
up work where ever he could find it. He did everything from
truck driving to farming watermelons, hence his nickname,
just to make ends meet. Many of the songs you’ll hear at
a Watermelon Slim show began as an a cappella tune in the
cab of a big rig.
The show is September 5 at 6:00 pm next to the Roth Fountain in downtown Sioux
City. There is a $2 charge at the gate and beer and wine is available for purchase.
